SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Pulp Modern is a fiction journal that publishes crime, fantasy, science fiction, horror, and westerns. Absolutely NO SUBJECT is taboo. Pulp Modern believes in true and absolute freedom of speech. Stories should be between 3500 and 5000 words. That word count is STRICTLY ENFORCED. At this time, there will be no serializations unless requested by the editor.

The next one-day submission window is:

SEPTEMBER 1, 2020 (12am to 11:59pm)

Pulp Modern will compensate writers a flat rate of twenty-five dollars (U.S.) per story (I understand this isn't a professional rate and I apologize. Right now, this money comes from my pocket and my pocket just isn't that deep).

Pulp Modern claims the following publication rights: First English-language Rights, English-language Periodical Rights, World Periodical Rights, and Electronic Distribution Rights. All rights will revert back to the writer six months after initial publication.  Should Pulp Modern choose to create an anthology of previously published work, new rights will be negotiated.

Pulp Modern will NOT CONSIDER simultaneous submissions.

Also, do not send multiple submissions at the same time.

Pulp Modern will not publish reprints unless they are requested by the editor.

To submit stories:

Send your story in standard manuscript format as an attached document (.doc or .rtf) to

Please write “fiction submission,” the genre your story falls under, and the title of the story in the subject line.

Like so:

Fiction Submission_Horror_Invasion of the Zombie Statues

Include a cover letter in the body of the email as well as a brief biography.

POETRY:

Beginning in winter, 2020, we will begin publishing poems in the digest as well. We are interested in poems dealing with the same genres as the fiction we publish -- crime/noir, horror, science fiction, fantasy, adventure, and western. At this time, I can only afford to pay ten dollars for a poem.

You may submit up to five poems per submission window (please do not submit poetry and fiction in the same email).

To submit poems, send your poems as a .doc attachment. The title of the poem, the genre it falls under, and your name should be on the first page of each poem you submit.

Please send your poems to:

therealpulpmodern (at) gmail (dot) com

In the subject line of your email, please write only, Poetry Submission.

Poetry submission windows will be separate from fiction submission windows.

We are not interested in reprints at this time.

We will only claim relevant First Rights for both print and digital upon acceptance. Rights will revert back to the author within six months of publication.

Next submission window for poetry: TBA

NON-FICTION:

Pulp Modern is interested in publishing a few non-fiction articles per issue related to the subject of pulp fiction and other genre issues. We are looking for entertaining articles rather than pedantic, academic-types of analyses that tend to put normal people to sleep (if that's offensive, too bad; Chief Editor Alec Cizak teaches college to pay the bills and is beyond tired of liberal arts gibberish...)

Non-fiction articles will be compensated with a contributor's copy of the digest.

Writer's interested in submitting a non-fiction article for consideration, please send a proposal to:

therealpulpmodern (at) gmail (dot) com

In the subject line, please write, ARTICLE PROPOSAL

If we are interested, we'll request the article.

The window for article proposals is always open.

Pulp Modern is published twice a year.

PULP MODERN FLASH:

Beginning in July, 2020, Pulp Modern will be launching a new flash fiction site for all pulp genres (crime/noir, horror, science fiction, fantasy, adventure, and western) called Pulp Modern Flash.

Stories should be 1000 words or less.

There are no rules here as far as subject matter. We ENCOURAGE hardcore fiction. We are NOT interested in being lectured and talked down to; mainstream publishing is all about that and there plenty of places to send that kind of work. We want to read STORIES that ALL human beings can relate to.

We are unable to pay at this time. However, stories we deem above and beyond excellent will be invited to be included in an eventual anthology (for which authors will be paid). We will also actively promote stories for any awards PMF may be eligible for;

Submission windows will be rolling and announced here and on social media.

The current submission window is: CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Please send submissions as .doc files to:

pulpmodernflash (at) gmail (dot) com

Format your subject line like so:

Title_genre

(i.e., Invasion of the Statue Zombies_Horror)

We will respond as quickly as possible.

Pulp Modern Flash claims First World Electronic Rights (any future publication rights will be negotiated with the author at a later time). We also claim Online Serial Rights in order to keep the story archived at the site.

We are NOT interested in reprints at this time.

Please submit only one story at a time.

Simultaneous submissions are okay as long as you inform us if a pending story has been accepted elsewhere.

Please include a short cover letter with your email that includes a brief bio.

Thank You,
